The Romanian War of Independence (1877–1878), fought against the Ottoman Empire, established the sovereignty of the Romanian state, proclaimed on May 9, 1877 by Mihail Kogălniceanu and confirmed by Prince Carol I. Romania entered the conflict alongside Russia, with the Romanian army's participation in the siege of Plevna and the victories at Grivița, Plevna, Rahova and Smârdan being decisive.
