He was so close to the restoration of his Throne due to a favorable national assembly at the time, that the Horse Carriage scheduled to take him back from Rheims was already under construction. His refusal of the republican tricolour caused the plan to foil.

Titled Count of Provence, he fled to England during the revolution that took his brother, and claimed the Throne as soon as his turn had come. He also ping-ponged the power with Napoleon I during the "Hundred days". Louis XVIII is the last King of France who died on the Throne.
